زبان انگلیسی پر است از اصطلاحات و ضرب المثل هایی که در زبان محاوره بسیار از آنها استفاده می شود. در انگلیسی اصطلاحات بسیاری وجود دارند که در آنها از رنگ ها استفاده شده است. در زیر اصطلاحات انگلیسی مربوط به رنگ ها با معنی فارسی و انگلیسی و همچنین مثال برای هر کدام آورده شده است.
black sheep: A person in a family or a community who is different from others, in a bad way
(کسی که با بقیه گروه یا خانواده فرق می کنه و مایه آبرو ریزیه)
My brother Ted didn't go to school; he is the black sheep in our family.
black and white: something that is written on paper
(نوشته و متن روی کاغذ، اشاره به رنگ کاغذ و رنگ نوشته ها دارد)
He told his secretary to prepare the agreement in black and white.
black and blue: bruised and beaten
(سیاه و کبود بخاطر ضربه دیدن)
Poor Jim was black and blue after he fell off the apple tree.
black as coal: very black
(سیاه مثل زغال)
My friend's cat is as black as coal.
black out: To lose consciousness; faint
It was a hard and tiring day, and she suddenly blacked out.
black eye: A bruise on someone’s eye

blue Monday: A Monday when you have to work after a happy weekend.
(روز کاری بعد از یک روز تعطیل، در ایران این روز شنبه است)
People usually wish they could sleep through blue Monday.
blue collar worker: A manual laborer, workers who work manually rather than sitting in the office
(طبقه کارگر که کار فیزیکی انجام می دهند)
Jack's father is a blue collar worker; he works as a mechanic in a company.
Antonym: White collar worker
out of the blue: by surprise; unexpectedly
(غیرمنتظره و بدون اطلاع قبلی)
At the last minute Johnny came out of the blue and caught the ball and scored the winning goal.
once in a blue moon: Very rarely; almost never
(به ندرت و خیلی کم، خیلی کم پیش می آید که رنگ ماه آبی باشد)
We only go out for Italian food once in a blue moon although we enjoy it very much.
feel blue: feel depressed
(احساس افسردگی داشتن)

"Nothing I'm just feeling a little blue."
blue-eyed boy: A boy or young man who is always noticed a lot by someone in a high position
(شخصی که همیشه مورد توجه معلم یا ریئس قرار می گیره)
He is such a blue-eyed boy! I don’t like that the manager always treats him as if he is special.
green thumb/green finger: A talent for gardening; ability to make things grow
(کسی که استعداد خوبی در باغبانی و کاشتن داره)
Mr. Wilson's neighbors say his flowers grow because he has a green thumb.
green with envy: Very jealous; full of envy
(احساس حسادت کردن)
Alice's friends were green with envy when they saw her new dress.
grass is always greener on the other side: a place that is far away, and better than, where you are now, or another person’s situation that is very different from your situation
(مرغ همسایه غازه)
He realized that the grass is always greener on the other side when he saw that his new job wasn’t perfect, and had its own problems too.
give someone the green light/get the green light: give/have permission to do something
(چراغ سبز به کسی نشون دادن)
They gave us the green light to advertise on their webpage.
red herring: An unimportant matter that draws attention away from the main subject
The first part of the question was a red herring to draw our attention away from the answer.
beet red: when somebody's face is red because of shyness
(از خجالت مثل لبو شدن)
I could see my son up on the stage, his little face was beet red!
catch someone red-handed: To catch someone when he/she is doing something wrong (مچ کسی را گرفتن، در حال ارتکاب جرم)
He kept lying to me about where he was going in the evenings, so yesterday I followed him and caught him red-handed. He was with another woman!
in the red: To be in debt to your bank, or owe an institution some money
(وضعیت نامساعد مالی، وقتی که بدهی زیاد داشته باشیم)
I’ve got three credit card bills to pay off at the moment. I hate being in the red!
paint the town red: To go out and have a really good time at a party
(حسابی خوشگذرونی کردن)
When my friends came to see me after so many years, we went out and painted the town red.
red tape: bureaucratic delay, a lot of formalities
(کاغذ بازی های اداری، فرمالیته)
I just want to start my own business, but the because of a lot of red tape I want to give up.
red-letter-day: A day that is memorable because of some important event
(روز تعطیل، روز بیاد ماندنی)
The day I graduated was a red-letter day for my mum, she still talks about it today.
roll out the red carpet: To greet a person with great respect and warm welcome
(از کسی استقبال گرم و با شکوه کردن)
When Barack Obama came to visit our school, we rolled out the red carpet for him.
see red: To react angrily against someone or something
John saw red when he heard someone shouting at his mother.
white collars: A term used for office workers that traditionally wear white shirts with a collar
(طبقه کارمندی که کار فیزیکی انجام نمی دهند)
We have a lot of white-collar workers at the moment in the company; We are in need for more blue collars.
white as a sheet: When someone is afraid a lot he/she is as white as a sheet
(سفید و رنگ پریده بخاطر ترس یا بیماری)
Harold are you alright? You’re as white as a sheet, what’s the matter?
white elephant: something that is of no use; useless possessions
(چیزی که سودی نداشته باشد و نگه داری از آن خرج هم داشته باشد)
My mum bought a new CD player for me, but it’s a white elephant. I don’t need it, I don’t even have any CDs!
white lie: A ‘little’ or ‘harmless’ lie told with good intentions
I just wanted to get out of work so I told my boss a little white lie, and said I had a doctor’s appointment.
white wash: To cover up faults or wrongdoings
(ماست مالی کردن)
Kate wanted to whitewash her faults but the teacher understood it.
yellow bellied: Someone who is coward or extremely timid
(ترسو و بزدل)
He is a yellow-bellied coward, and doesn't stand up for what he thinks is right!
